I'm a self-proclaimed pillow fanatic. I like to walk into a room, look at a couch and feel like it's worthy of a magazine cover or showroom. Is it practical to own more pillows than a retail shore sells? NO! Does it matter to me anyway? Heck YES!
I find that pillow covers can be very expensive for the actual purpose they serve. Often they are tossed on the floor as soon as someone wants to sit down. But this is my belief...scatter as many as you want anyway. Gather a huge variety; some key ones from name brands you LOVE, and the rest, just buy from Home Goods and Etsy. NOTE: Check at the bottom of this blog for my designer trick to create fluffy, well stuffed pillows because many pillows are sold as covers only!
Here's an example of my designer 'mix and match':
I admit, I LOVE Serena & Lily. But I didn't want to spend the equivalent of a weekend trip in Nantucket on all their pillows. So I opted for the two left of center 'Granada' pillows and the rest....from Etsy for a fraction of the cost. Plus, I get to support fellow small business women/sewers. (Source for coffee table, denim poofs, lamps and stands is Beehive in Fairfield.)
Here are few more ways to have "Champagne Taste on a Prosecco Budget":
The above console is from Serena & Lily's "Blake" raffia collection in Indigo. The sunchair is from an end of summer season sale from same, topped with an Etsy pillow. Various other items are sourced from Home Goods (baskets), Amazon (books) and Etsy (sea glass beads). Rug is, yes you guessed it, Serena & Lily's "Ryder Denim".
This is the Serena & Lily "Venice" rattan chair and pad with an Etsy Ikat pillow for pop. (Oh dear, my bad, it does need some fluffing). Lamps and tables are from Beehive in Fairfield.
Bottom line: Buy your designer pillows for the main event. Then go to other online sources and type in the color and patterns you like, and 'Voila!' instant decor. DESIGNER NOTE: Always order your pillow covers smaller than the inserts. So if you want a 22" x 22" pillow, order a 20" x 20" insert. I always buy goose down for the quality and fluff!
